How to Report A Sexual Assault While in The Custody of Law Enforcement

PREA – Prison Rape Elimination Act
The Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) is a federal law implemented in 2003 to address the prevention and elimination of sexual abuse in correctional institutions. The final regulatory standards to implement PREA went into effect on August 20, 2012.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of sexual abuse and sexual harassment of any inmate. The Agency supports the prosecution of persons who commit acts of sexual misconduct within its facility.

The Madison County Detention Facility has developed uniform guidelines and procedures to reduce the risk of in-custody sexual assault and sexual activity.

Inmates are encouraged to report all allegations of sexual abuse and/or sexual misconduct immediately. Inmates are afforded several different avenues of reporting. The inmate may report in written or verbal form to:

  • Any detention officer;
  • Any Detention Bureau medical personnel; or
  • Through the Kiosk reporting system;

Third Party Reporting (PREA 115.54)
