School Safety

It is the mission of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Program to provide a safe learning and drug free environment that promotes good health and is free from violence, weapons, hazards, vandalism and substance abuse. The role an SRO plays will differ in each situation. An SRO can be called upon to enforce, teach, counsel, assist, supervise or direct in order to get the job done.

The School Resource Officers Program is a nationally accepted program that places a law enforcement officer on the campus in schools. The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has School Resource Deputies who are assigned to each of the Madison County Schools.

The SRO works with the administration, educators, and counselors to make our schools safe. An SRO not only enforces the law but may be required to teach, counsel, assist, supervise or direct in order to get the job done. In addition to being an active high profile law enforcement officer, the SRO is a resource for students, parents, teachers and administration regarding law issues. The SRO Program is a proactive approach developing resources and solutions to problems involving children within the school system.

Below are several areas the SRO will be actively involved while working on the school campus:

  • A visible, uniformed law enforcement figure on campus to deal with any law-enforcement-related issues
  • A classroom resource for instruction regarding educational programs concerning drug abuse and awareness, violence prevention and other topics relating to criminal laws.
  • An extension of the school administration dealing with a variety of safety and security issues.
  • A resource for students enabling them to be associated with a law enforcement figure within the student’s environment rather than in a traditional law-enforcement environment
  • A resource for teachers, parents, guardians and students for conferences related to individual problems or questions.
  • A counseling resource for students regarding law-enforcement issues which affect the educational environment.
